Cao Dai Temple and Black Virgin Mountain from Saigon: Is the Tay Ninh Day Trip Worth It?
5 min read
The short answer
Tay Ninh is the right trip if you are curious about Caodaism, a religion with its own temple style, and don’t mind a long day. The Cu Chi Tunnels, Black Virgin Mountain and Cao Dai Temple tour costs €49.41 per person and has 4.7 / 5 from 502 reviews. If watching the noon prayer matters to you, look at the third tour below, the only one of the three whose timetable puts you at the temple at noon. If you only want the tunnels, a half-day is easier: see Ben Dinh or Ben Duoc.
What the day looks like
The page lists 12 hours and English as the guide language. Transport depends on the package: the big-group option starts from a meeting point, while the small-group, VIP and private options include hotel pickup between 6:30 and 7:00 AM. The itinerary box gives about 1.5 hours by bus to Cu Chi, two hours at the tunnels, two hours more on the road to Tay Ninh, a 50-minute lunch break, two hours at the Cao Dai Temple, 1.5 hours at Black Virgin Mountain and 3 hours back, about 6.5 hours on a bus in total. The description on the same page runs the other way round: Black Virgin Mountain first, then the temple and lunch, the tunnels in the afternoon and arrival back in the city at about 7:00 to 7:30 PM. The page says the order can change with traffic and weather but that all stops are visited, so ask which order your date follows if the prayer matters to you.
Black Virgin Mountain, the highest in the region according to the page, includes a cable car only on selected options; others give free time at the base. Time there depends on weather, cable car operations and queues. Groups are up to 25 people in the standard option, 15 in the small group and 13 in a private tour. The page lists the tour as not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems or wheelchair users. On public holidays a surcharge is payable on site: 200,000 VND per person for big and small groups, 250,000 VND for the limousine option and 500,000 VND for a private tour, on 26 April, 29 April to 1 May, 2 September, 24 and 25 December, 31 December to 1 January and 3 to 11 February 2027.
The temple visit
The Cao Dai Holy See lies northwest of the city in Tay Ninh province, about 90 to 100 km from downtown Ho Chi Minh City according to Vietnam’s tourism portal. The same source says prayers are held four times a day, at midnight, 6 AM, noon and 6 PM, each usually around 45 minutes though the length varies, and that the noon one is the busiest, with tour buses arriving between about 11:00 AM and 12:45 PM. Visitors watch from the upper gallery, which fills early; the portal suggests arriving 30 to 40 minutes before the prayer for a front spot. The portal gives entry as free and notes that no official tariff is published. Because of the stairs to the gallery, it describes wheelchair access as limited.
The booking page of the 12-hour tour only says that, depending on timing, you “may” see the prayer ceremony.
What to wear: shoulders and knees covered, hats off, and shoes off at the steps, according to the portal. The tour page also asks you to dress respectfully and follow the temple’s guidelines. It is an active place of worship, not a stage.
Choosing a version
- The Cu Chi, Black Virgin Mountain and Cao Dai tour is the 12-hour day described above, with private or small-group options.
- The Tay Ninh, Black Virgin Mountain and Cao Dai Temple tour (€34.58) comes from the same operator and leaves out Cu Chi. The page lists 10.5 to 11 hours, about 2 to 3 hours each way, hotel pickup in Districts 1 and 4 or a meeting point at the operator’s office, entrance fees for the mountain and the temple, and lunch. The cable car is not included and can be bought as an option. If the group reaches the temple around noon, the page says you may see the prayer. It lists the tour as not suitable for children under 4, pregnant women, people with mobility impairments or heart problems, wheelchair users and people afraid of heights; sleeveless and see-through clothing are not allowed. The same holiday surcharges apply.
- The Cu Chi, Black Lady Mountain and Cao Dai tour (€49.34) comes from a different operator and has a fixed timetable: pickup at 7:00 AM (free within Districts 1, 3 and 4), Black Virgin Mountain from 9:30 to 11:30 AM, the Cao Dai Temple from 12:00 to 12:40 PM with the noon prayer, lunch, then the Ben Duoc tunnels from 3:00 to 4:30 PM and back in the city between 6:00 and 7:00 PM. The cable car is included only if you select the ticket option; without it you wait for the group at the foot of the mountain. Guides speak English and Vietnamese, and a private option exists.
Who should skip it
Skip it if you don’t like long bus days, if you have only one day for Vietnam’s war history (the War Remnants Museum and Independence Palace is within the city), or if you want a river day instead; the Mekong tours are a gentler 9-hour option. All 31 Cao Dai and Tay Ninh tours start from €20.63.
